SUCCESS STORY
An important insight into the kinetics of interactions between antibiotics and ribosomes revealed in the new study from the Mankin group, UIC
Congratulations to Alexander Mankin and his team from UIC, for the new publication in PNAS: “Kinetics of drug–ribosome interactions defines the cidality of macrolide antibiotics.” The study, which compared the binding and dissociation kinetics of bacteriostatic and bactericidal antibiotics to ribosomes suggests that it is the prolonged attachment (or slow dissociation rate) of the antibiotic to a ribosome that infers its -cidal property; likely by a mechanism of time-dependent depletion of factors required for proper translation. The finding opens new possibilities into designing “more sticky” or more slowly dissociating bactericidal antibiotics. Mankin has been affiliated with CBC since 2009 when he received a CBC Spark Award. The same year he was also an invited speaker at the 7th Annual CBC Symposium: “The Biology of Non-Coding RNAs: Old Molecules, New Actions.” In addition, Mankin served on the CBC Spark Review Panel (2010-2011).

Dominissini is the first author on a recent report published in Nature: “The dynamic N1-methyladenosine methylome in eukaryotic messenger RNA.” He is a postdoctoral fellow in Chuan He’s laboratory and recipient of a 2014 CBC Postdoctoral Research Award. The report is a collaborative effort by scientists from Tel Aviv University, Sheba Medical Center, and the University of Chicago. The authors describe a new mRNA modification, N1-methyladenosine (m1A), that is evolutionarily conserved from yeast to humans, is enriched around start codons and appears to promote mRNA translation.
